Apologies if this is a little off topic.

I am installing a pfsense firewall into a start up business - couple of local clients, couple of vpn connections. I also have to source and set up a file / web server, which will run Ubuntu server. For the server would I see any gains by having a mobo with an Intel NIC over a cheaper board with a Realtek NIC? Anyone care to recommend a mobo: decent amount of sata connections, gb lan, pref onboard graphics, the more pcie the better but only really need one atm.

For servicing clients on the local network where they may be able to pull up to 1 Gbps, definitely. Better quality NIC will be faster and chew up less of the server's CPU.
