1gbps capable xseries220 ibm with pfsense ? need advices !
-
Hi,
Is xseries 220 from ibm server capable for 1gbps on lan infrastructure with aprox 8-10 mbps max real download speed from isp(torrent aplication) from wan(wan will have 100mbps interface) with pfsense installed ?
Specs: 512mb sd, 1.4ghz cpu p3, actual working os windows sever 2003 of course will be changed with pfsense 2.0.1 if hardware if suitable for up performance, also hdd is on raid.
Can pfsense be installed on raid interface hdd ? (i'm asking this because i've had some problems installing ubuntu server, some error with blinking leds on keyboard because of raid).
I just want to change my current sistem(celeron 1,9ghz with 256ddr1) with this server because it has a better cooling and is designed to work continuouslly.
Also on lan i will have only 2-3 clients and one wifi ap.
Needed packages: Nut, Squid/Squid3, Sarg, Open Vpn(client export).Have some link with server info: http://www-947.ibm.com/support/entry/portal/docdisplay?lndocid=migr-58449

nobody worked with this kind of hardware….need some advice !

I would go for the X335 instead or X345.
Both have run 1.2.3 for me no issues for a long time.

Yes but i allredy have xserver220 from ibm with those specs mentioned above….i'm not sure if will be capable of that requirements
For you is working installed on raid ? -
You have highlighted 1Gbps for LAN traffic however it's not clear if you are going to have several LAN interfaces that will need to talk to each other at that speed.
You will not achieve 1Gbps throughput with a PIII.
However if you're using simply WAN and LAN then you won't require anything like 1Gbps.Steve

One wan 100mbps,
One lan 100mbps-wifi ap,
Second lan with 1gbps interface and only one client…i just want to improve with this because i have the interface already and i want to change sistem to this server because is built to work non stop and it has better cooling.
No traffic needed between wifi clients and 1gbps interface.
The biggest concerns are that on 1gbps client i need 8-9 mbps real speed from torrent, wich i already have with actual sistem. Will be capable of this ? -

No problem. I would expect that will firewall/NAT >250Mbps.
Squid will slow that somewhat but not torrent traffic.Steve
