Openvpn idle bandwidth consumption too much?
-
Hi all,
I have two pfsense connect with Openvpn tunnel with peer to peer shared key.
In idle the tunnel network consumption is arround 700 kbps,I think it is much especially since I have about 800 kbps upload one on each side (ADSL).
I turned off all the equipment (PC etc. ..) on each side, it looks like its come from the tunnel.
I used the configuration in http://doc.pfsense.org/index.php/OpenVPN_Site-to-Site_(Shared_Key,_2.0)
Help please

Have you done a packet capture on the tunnel to see what the traffic is?
Normally the only idle traffic would be a ping/response once every 10 seconds with only minimal usage then.

I've seen similar issues on an OpenVPN p2p shared key setup we have. We were using FreeNAS (now Nas4Free) and ultimately a reboot of the NAS server cleared it up, though I am still not sure of the exact cause. What services/traffic do you typically push over the OVPN link?

Until you do a sniff your just going to be guessing.
Troubleshooting: Unexplained network traffic
Step 1) Sniff the traffic to see what it is
Step 2) Fix what is causing the unwanted traffic you see in step 1
Step 3) Relax and have a beer.
