Same problem when installing from today's image. (pfSense-LiveCD-2.1-BETA0-i386-20121129-1949.iso.gz).</p>
<p dir="auto">Had to roll back to the previous one, nothing terrible  ;-)</p>

I've also updated the vm (a virtualbox running inside an ubuntu 12.10) to the lastest version (2.1-BETA0 (i386) built on Thu Nov 29 19:50:12 EST 2012) and everything runs smooth !</p>

No problems here… so either there's more to it, or it's been fixed since the image that didn't work.</p>
