VOTE! Is pfSense 2.1-RC1 considerably slower than pfSense 1.2.3 Release?
-
Hi everyone,
I love pfSense and I think it has given me a lot of room to work in a much more comfortable environment than anything else out there. However, I am concerned about the way the GUI is responding to everything I do. I had a chance to look at one of my old installs with version 1.2.3 and it runs like a stallion horse! So, I am wondering if anyone else is getting the same feeling? If so, can we please have Devs attention to this as it is becoming a big issue slowly.
I am not sure if it is the number of packages, the way GUI is written now,…but maybe one of the Devs can weigh in for more clarification.
Cheers,

That may depend on the platform and how much RAM you have.
In many ways, 2.1 is faster, and in others, it could be slower (especially on low-RAM systems) and also if you have slow DNS servers it can make the GUI feel sluggish by comparison when accessing the dashboard or some other pages that need DNS

2.03 release works fine for me.
2.1RC works fine for me.
When comparing, are you comparing apples to apples? Are all the same things running on the systems for instance? All the same graphs?

Generally speaking, no things aren't slower in the GUI where everything is 100% identical. There are the possibilities jim-p mentioned.
The base OS of 2.x is slightly faster pushing packets than 1.x's base OS versions. The most important job performance-wise has only improved in 2.0.x and 2.1. How much depends on your specific hardware and combination of hardware, but generally 5% or so improvement on top end performance going from 1.2.3 to 2.1.
