Througput on Optiplex GX150 P3
-
I have an Optiplex GX150 P3 with 256 MB of RAM. I have an event where I have 120 user who will need to connect via the portal page in order to access the internet. There is one Intel gigabit NIC on the WAN end which all access points connect to. All users will only be accessing the internet. Connection to the internet is 6MB DSL connection. I just want to make sure that the machine is powerful enough to handle 120 connections via the portal page to connect to the internet without problems.
Thanks,
Mark

This should work if you are not using the "reauthenticate users every minute" option with an external radius server. This is a design limitation that we inheritet from m0nwall as our captive portal is mostly a 100% copy of their code. If you need more details why it won't work under that circumstances please search the m0n0 mailinglist what happens on the backend. Besides that it should work fine on that machine with that amount of users.
There one thing that you should probably check out first too: Make sure your Accesspoints are presenting the real clients macadress to the captive portal, otherwise you might end up with users being authenticated if another user has already authenticated through that accesspoint.

I am using the built in authentication. Also I was just informed they might have situations where they might have 250 users connected. Besides the odvious potential bottleneck of the 6 MB internet connection, is there any foreseeable problem with hardware limitations on 250 users going out to the internet?
Also…I am using Cisco access points. I am unfamiliar as to whether or not they are presenting the users MAC address but I can call TAC if noone knows here where that option may be.
Thanks,

I think the cisco accesspoints should be ok in that regard. I know that there have been some opensource firmwares for the linksys routers that had issues with that. The box you have should not ave any problems with presenting a CP page to the 250 users. Requthentication like I said is another problem but unless you do accounting (that you can't do anyway when using the bild in user manaer) you don't need reathentication. Also the box is capable to push much more than 6 mbit/s so your current setup is rather limited by your wan bandwidth than by the hardware or software itself.
