Installation from LiveCD onto CF with Embeded Kernel
-
I have installed pfSense from the LiveCD onto my 512 MB CF connected using a CF to IDE adapter. I have removed the swap partition and then I choosed the "Embeded Kernel", but in the System Status the platform say "pfSense". Shouldn't it say "Embeded" also I have access to the "Packages" wich from the forum I'm not supposed to be able to install them.
Also, what is the "MBUF Usage"?

You have a full install with an embedded kernel, which is not the same as an embedded install. You may not want to run that way for long, it'll likely kill your CF. What you did is meant for embedded hardware with hard drives or microdrives.
mbuf is complex, suffice it to say you're fine as long as it's not at the max. It's really not worthy of being on the front page, virtually everyone can ignore it.

Okay, I'll get a nullmodem, at leat with the Full Install I was able to assign the network card correctly for the embedded to reboot corectly without having to have a null modem cable.
Can I simply upgrade the Full Install to an embeded firmware and not loosing my config?
I want it to be embedded, because I don't want to ear the Hard drive spinning all the time, old HDD drive me crazy… The router is an old P3 700 with 256 MB of RAM using 3 x 3Com network card. At full cable modem speed (10 mbits) using QoS the CPU run between 30~40%

I have installed pfSense 1.0.1 from the LiveCD on a CF like you.
The trick to convert it to "embedded" is to run this command:
echo embedded > /etc/platform
and reboot.
