Compatible extension nic for my current pfSense?
-
G'day all lovers of the finest firewall in the world ;D
I have the hardware as in my sig. I currently have VDSL, but I want to have a fallback via cable. I do understand I need an extra NIC for it. Wise men have told me to stay with Intel for that, and so that was what I am looking for. Unfortunately, the only Intel nic that is on 'some sort of Intel HCL' is a rather old, but more important, very expensive Nic: the 'Intel Pro/1000 PT':
http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/dq77kb/sb/CS-033883.htm
Which costs 61 EUR excl. shipment. Round that to 70-75 EUR. There are way less expensive Intel Nics for around 20 EUR, but I don't know if they will work with my board. Is there some sort of 'wisdom' or thing to alternatively check to see if cheaper Intel Nics, such as for example the cheap ones in here:

https://tweakers.net/pricewatch/247633/intel-pro-1000-gt-netwerk-pci-adapter-low-profile.html
Will work with my board?
Thank you in advance very much for your help ;D

Yes, and no.

That first linked NIC should work just fine as it has the same chip that is also integrated to your motherboard. I don't see a reason for it not working :)

@Hollander:
Yes, and no.
Thank you for your reply :D
But what does it mean :-\
You asked if those two NICs would work in your board. The answers are "yes, and no", respectively (the second is PCI and your board doesn't have a PCI slot). Whether or not the first one fits in your case is another matter entirely. That's a Thin-ITX board and if you've used a low-profile case or a tall heat sink then the card might not fit.
