New installation

I am trying to install my first pfSense setup and have a minor problem I am trying to figure out.
I appear to not be able to get any ping response beyond my WAN interface.
WAN> 66.118.82.122/29 DG set to 66.118.82.121 the next hop
LAN> 10.10.254.253/30 DG set to 66.118.82.122 the next hop
Internally the other side of the 10.10.254.253 is my L3 switch with ip of 10.10.254.254
From a computer connected directly to the LAN port with a static ip of 10.10.254.254 I can connect to the WebConfigurator and on the dashboard I see that the WAN port is off line.
I have reset the DSL modem, tested all cables, connected a laptop to the modem as 66.118.82.122 and can ping website, verified the ports on my server running pfSense, cussed & pulled out some hair…
I have been reading/using the pfSense Definitive Guide but not found the answer to my problem.

HA HA HA!
Just found that my DSL modem is dead so I will be calling ISP to fix that…

You should not have a gateway set on LAN.
