Help getting Google hangouts video calls to work on Android.
-
According to Google's help page, the following port rules are needed.
-
A UDP connection from the participant to Google on ports 19302 through 19309
-
A TCP connection from the participant to Google on ports 19305 through 19309
-
A TCP connection from the participant to Google on port 80
-
A TCP connection from the participant to Google on port 443 (SSL)
I have these in my firewall rules, and naturally the web version of Hangouts works great on a PC. HOWEVER, video calls do not work with an Android phone and Google does not have any documentation on what ports the Android version of Hangouts uses.
I'd like to pretty much unplug everything else from the network, try to initiate and receive Google hangouts video calls and then analyze the results. What is the best way to capture this traffic in PFsense so I can have a look at it?
Thanks!

As a start, you might note the timestamp on your Status->Syslogs->Firewall just before you attempt an Android call, then try the call and see what pfsense blocks by default.
This might at least give you a clue if the port range coming back from Google is different from what you expect.
You could even turn ON logging for some of your existing "pass" rules to see if they get tripped by Android devices.
All in all it should be Lots 'O fun ::)

Found it. In typical Google fashion, one hand doesn't know what the other hand is doing.
Google hangouts video chat on Android uses the old Google talk port TCP/UDP 5222. All is well now….
