Can't get Squid to work
-
I am completely at loss how to explain this. I just installed Squid3-dev on a pfSense machine. It seems that I have missed something as the traffic seems to bypass Squid even as the dashboard says Squid is up and running.
1. Last week I installed pfSense (64-bit) on a spare machine. It is connected to a bridged modem. Pfsense is configured with static IP on WAN side and 192.x on LAN.
2. I successfully implemented LDAP based authentication (in User Management) with help of a tutorial posted on web (tested using built in diagnostic tool). However I don't get what purpose it served as the clients are able to connect to internet without providing any authentication details.
3. Couple of days ago I installed Squid3-dev. I just installed it and didn't configure it. The idea was to use explicit proxy and not transparent proxy. The Internet kept working as usual.
4. Today I configured Squid (non-transparent, 10GB cache, 512MB allocated memory). Also set it to authenticate my users via LDAP. It is confusing as to why it requires it's own authentication setup and doesn't utilize the one which I setup in step 2 above. However, I don't know if it is working because users are not asked any password and there is no way to test this one.
The web traffic seems to be bypassing Squid. I suspect that I am grossly missing something.
I did my bit of Googling…went all the way to creating the A and PTR records in my reverse lookup zone..installed lightsquid to see what squid is doing...nothing in cache folder it seems.
This is my first time with pfsense and squid. Have to go a long way...any suggestions?
Thanks
