Converting From Windows Server 2008 R2 to pfSense.
-
Hi,
PLEASE HELP!!!
I currently have an HP ProLiant ML370 G4 server, (retired from a business), I am currently using it as a Web Server (IIS), File Server (documents and pictures as well as client files are stored here for me to access from other computers on my network), Active Directory, Domain Controller, and DNS. If i switch to using pfSense on this server, will i be able to do all of these things? or should i dedicate an old PC in the parts closet to a pfSense box and not bother switching?
Thanks :) -
It's best practice to have a dedicated firewall with minimal services running; think small surface for attack from the outside. I would keep your existing internal server, and use pfSense as your router, firewall and vpn server.

Thanks :)While it is at least hypothetically possible to load "all those things" onto a pfSense server, it would not be easy, it probably would not be stable, and I'm fairly certain that it probably would not serve those functions as well as Windows 2008 is currently doing it. I can't imagine a valid justification for attempting such a thing other than as a challenge for the terminally bored.
Without knowing your exact motivation for making such a switch, I would strongly recommend dedicating a separate box as a pfSense firewall.
If your goal is to simply stop using the Microsoft product, there are a few products that come to mind that seek to be drop in replacements; Zentyal, ClearOS, and Univention.
