Upgrade from a 32bit 2.1 to 32bit 2.2 never worked for me either. I don't remember the exact error message now. So I tried to do a clean install of the 32bit 2.2 and it crashed every time after selected option 99 to install on the drive, ran fine from a USB stick. I ended up installing the 64 bit clean and it's been rock solid. In addition, the FreeBSD 10.1 in the 2.2 version fixed all the performance issues I had with the USB Ethernet adapter AX88772 chipset.
The only problem I've noticed is that squidguard service does not start until a second reboot after each upgrade. Perhaps because it gets installed before squid does during the package update. -
Just tried 2.1.5 -> 2.2 beta
It is started and working, but user scripts placed on /usr/local/etc/rc.d are deleted during upgrade -
doing upgrade it hung twice once on config upgrade then i think second time it said something about users was distracted and dont remember now but 2 reboots got it going all but ssh wont start
Can you test it again with recent snapshots? I've fixes some upgrade issues last week.

Config you sent me is not from 2.1.5, based on its version, it's from 2.2.
Could you please share the 2.1.5 config?
