Issue with Deliberant CPE 2 EIRP Wireless System
-
I am having an issue with pfSense not being able to communicate through a Deliberant CPE 2. Initially everything will work fine but after a while the internet will just stop. I cannot ping out, either from my computer, or from pfSense. The internal network remains fine. I just loose all WAN access. In an effort to problem solve this I reinstalled pfSense multiple times with different configurations of Hard Drive and Swap Space. I also switched the WAN and LAN ports to make sure it was not the Ethernet card. My network configuration was as follows:
Deliberant CPE 2 ===> pfSense (LAN 10.6.6.1) ===> LinkSys DD-WRT Switch (10.6.6.4) ===> LAN (DHCP: 10.6.6.10 - 150)
Frustrated I decided to reconfigure my Network configuration back to the previous way and just have the pfSense box hooked up as a separate subnet though the LinkSys. Here is that configuration:
Main Network:
Deliberant CPE 2 ===> LinkSys DD-WRT Router/Gateway (10.6.6.1) ===> LAN (DHCP 10.6.6.10-149)pfSense Test Network
Deliberant CPE 2 ===> LinkSys DD-WRT Router/Gateway (10.6.6.1) ===> pfSense (10.6.6.250) ===> LAN (10.1.1.1)I did this for testing purposes but the rest of my network is running through the DD-WRT Router/Gateway. With this configuration I have not had any issues with pfSense. I have had it running for a number of days and it has been solid and perfect. The only variable in all this is that pfSense has not has not had to do any work since I only have one computer hooked to the pfSense LAN up for testing purposes. All of this makes me think that there is some issue with the Deliberant CPE 2 and its communication with pfSense. Does anyone have any ideas?
During this process I logged some unplug and plug events.

Deliberant CPE 2 ===> pfSense (LAN 10.6.6.1) ===> LinkSys DD-WRT Switch (10.6.6.4) ===> LAN (DHCP: 10.6.6.10 - 150)
Just read the first few lines and stopped right there!
Are you saying that you connected pfSense's WAN port to the CPE, and its LAN port is feeding the WAN port of the DD-WRT router?
If so, is one of these two in bridge mode or are both of them in NAT router mode?The IP scheme above seems to indicate that pfSense is in router mode and DD-WRT is in bridge mode, but then why does it have a different IP address? Aren't they in the same subnet? Doesn't make sense. (Did you subdivide the 10.6.6.0/24 subnet?)
If they are both in router mode you are running probably a double NAT, is it intentional?Maybe I don't understand what you are trying to achieve, I admit I didn't read your material past the 4th line as the above line caught my attention and troubled me.

I think your problem has to do with the fact that you have two routers in series and you are using the same subnet.
Just use 10.6.6.0/24 on the first and 10.6.7.0/24 on the second and your outbound traffic should work.

Thanks haleakalas for the reply. I have my DD-WRT set up as a WAP/switch like this: http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Wireless_Access_Point. It does not route any traffic. Also, I am unable to ping directly from the pfSense WebGUI which should not be affected by my network setup at all since it is connected directly to my WAN/Modem. However, I might be missing something so please tell me if I am. But I think it should work on this setup. I feel it is an issue between the Deliberant and pfSense box. However, everything works fine when i have DD-WRT hooked up to the Deliberant as a gateway. Thanks again for the reply!

So, basically you are trying to setup a plain vanilla pfSense and additionally you want a wifi access point in bridge mode with your LAN subnet.
Start by setting up pfSense and make it work. If your hardware is right, your install is right you should have it up and running in no time.
At that point you should have nothing but a WAN cable from your pfSense box to your Internet Modem, and a LAN cable to the network switch box. (and a computer connected to the network switch with an ethernet cable - NO WIFI YET, that you would also use to run the WebConfig on pfSense)You may want to check that pfSense's console shows your public IP on the WAN side and your LAN private subnet address. You should be able to ping any public server out there assuming that they are willing to respond. Try to ping www.grc.com, it should resolve to a public IP address and give you ping feedback. The same way, you should be able to ping any computer on your LAN by IP address.
If any of these is not working your pfSense is not properly set. Go back and check your dynamic ip settings on the WAN, the static IP setting on the LAN, the DNS server addresses, your DHCP server settings on the LAN side (if you're using DHCP for your LAN side computers/devices)
Again, until everything said above is working flawlessly do not even touch to wifi, access point, etc. You are in the wired ethernet world right now.
Once you're done with the above, it's time to leave pfSense alone!
Now, setup your wifi access point whatever that is. Linksys with dd-wrt in bridge mode I understand.
So, you should have only one single wire connecting your wifi A/P to the network switch box. It might go to the WAN side or to the LAN side of your wifi box (Linksys) depending how the bridge is built with dd-wrt.Work on it until it is fully functional, meaning that with a wifi connected computer you should be able to ping, and access any computer on your local network.
If you're not there yet your problem is isolated to dd-wrt and Linkysy wifi box. Just focus on it, do not change anything with your pfSense config. Do not waste your time trying to access public servers on the internet, etc. You should be able to see your own LAN first before you get any internet traffic.When this much works, you should also be able to ping the LAN side of your pfSense router.
So try to ping your static LAN IP address on pfSense. If everything is done, next try to ping some outside, public servers like www.grc.com (from your wifi connected computer/laptop).Well, you should be done by now.
Edit / Addition:
If you get to make everything work and after a while you notice that you can no longer access the internet via your WAN, check pfSense's console for dynamic IP loss with your internet provider. If that's the case try to reboot and try to figure out if it is going to loose its IP again and how much time after reboot. Repeat your test a few times until you have a firm idea that this is happening over and over and within a certain time-frame. Meanwhile do not change any other parameters/components in your overall system. If you consistently loose your IP, it's likely that you have a NIC problem (hardware or device driver -wise). Install a new, maybe different type of net interface, reconfig pfSense's interfaces and start testing again.
The WAN dynamic IP loss scenario is what I experienced repeatedly when I was trying to use a USB/Ethernet adapter.Hope this helps.
