Installing to a SanDISK Cruzer FIT Drive
-
Okay…so the 4GB CF Card that I had my system installed on failed.
I have a few 8GB SanDISK Cruzer FIT drives around, so I figured I'd use one of those. I wrote the IMG to one, and formatted another as FAT32. I put them both in my SuperMicro 1U rackmount unit, and booted it up. The problem is, when I get around to installing, I ALWAYS get an error. It won't write to the CRUZER drive. I adjust the boot order, the 1st drive, etc...it just does not work. I can't make it work.
So, I had an extra 250GB HDD laying around, so I threw that in and it installed to it NO PROBLEM. Works a treat. The problem is, I don't want that drive in there. I want to use this 8GB USB drive.
Does anyone have any pointers as to how I can get it installed to this 8GB USB Card and run off that?

What error did you see when you tried to install?
What image did you write? Why did you format one to fat32?
You should really run a Nano image if you're going to be booting from a USB flash drive.

Steve, thanks for the speedy reply. Can you tell me what IMAGE I need to install on this 8GB flash drive to be able to install, boot and continually run off of it? I want that to be the ONLY connected storage device.
Does that make sense? Here's the image I wrote: pfSense-memstick-2.2-RELEASE-i386.img

So I downloaded the NanoBSD image with serial+VGA. I wrote the image to the 8GB cruzer disc. I powered the unit down, removed all storage devices except the 8GB cruzer unit. I boot it up. I get to the point where I hit "I" for installer, select quick install and get this error.

With the Nano images there is no install process. The complete bootable image is written to the flash card ready to run. If you're seeing a menu with 'install' as an option you have the wrong image.

Stephen, you were correct. I wasn't properly writing the right image to the disc. I got it up and running. I feel a little foolish, but oh well.
Thanks very much!
