PfSense 2.2 and the Hardware @ the Store
-
Hello all -
In having my homemade pfSense box crash with 2.2, I've come to the conclusion that I'm going to just get a box that is built by the pfSense folks. Already a gold member, this is yet another way I can do my part to keep pfSense going, plus I want something that's built by the same crew that puts the software out.
That being said, with the release of 2.2 I had some questions. I'm going to be using this box in my SOHO; no more than 10 people connected to the box at any one time, running 4 VLANs, IPSec (incoming), Snort, with an 80/10 cable connection, soon to be 100/10 (whatever). So…
1. Would the VK-T40E be sufficient for this environment?
2. If so (above), should I upgrade the RAM?
3. Does the 2.2 release of the PFS degrade (or help improve) the performance of the VK-T40E?
4. I hear / read there's a new board or something coming out soon (RSS-VE?). Should I wait to purchase?Thank you in advance - I appreciate the help for such a trivial topic.

As of last week this said March 2015 and had a price tag of $349.00. That didn't include the pfSense support though so I'd expect them to add $100 or more to the price which makes it considerably more expensive than the APU sold by Netgate and not really a "replacement".
If that's still within your budget though it might be worth a wait as even the low-end Rangeley Atoms are MUCH faster than the T40E.

Is the 4GB eMMC flash onboard used to install pfsense? or is that for something else?

I suppose it could be. For a full install with snort, squid, etc. you'd want a mSATA card.
