<![CDATA[Watchguard X700 Question]]>Hey All

I have been using PFsesne for a while now but i would like to go to a watchguard X700 box.  I have been doing some reading and some people are saying its not overly stable.

Has anyone got any comments about this.  Good or bad?

"Quiet and rackable". Unfortunately these two things together are rare. Mostly because rack mount gear is expected to work in a data center jammed up against a load of other hot gear and they all have 40mm fans to fit in the 1U height so …. loud!

Our own current hardware (such as this: https://store.pfsense.org/SG-4860/ ) is fanless in desktop format but we have to fit fans in the rackmount version (https://store.pfsense.org/SG-4860-1U/ ) due to the restricted cooling and potentially hotter surroundings.

You might look at something that is desktop format with a rackmount option or even just use a shelf!

What box would people recommended i dont want to spend loads as i have a working system?

Sometimes it is not so easy to get all things, that are urgent needed or wished, under one head, but often
money can really with ease change this things well and fast, you could try out the pfSense SG-C2758
appliance, pre-installed pfsense, support and really powerful, perhaps it is also fan less or quite.

4 interfaces, Quiet and rackable would be nice.

This can be nearly all, from the lowest bottom to the highest top. but what is your budget!?
it does not make any sense to suggest you many appliances and they are all to high in price.

im looking at watchguard x700 and x1000 but heard there not very quiet.

In what surrounding or area you would install that firewall? Living room or private at home
or at work in a 19" rack together with other network equipment?

Does anyone have one they can say how loud they are.  it will be going in a patch cabinet
inside a cupboard.

APU board in a dual rack box with a miniPCIe to 2 GB LAN ports adapter
APU2 board in a dual rack box with a miniPCIe to 2 GB LAN Port adapter
Jetway N2930 board in a dual rack box with 4 Intel based GB LAN Ports
Axiomtek NA342R or NA361R 19" appliance with 4 or 6 Intel GB LAN Ports

Alternately would a APU board in a special APU case from the Calexium store with a SSD and two extra LAN Ports
fit your needs to solve this out, by going quite and with 4 GB LAN Ports.

All depends on what mobo/nic is in there, I really guess.

Nokia IP560 EM7800 Firewall Security Appliance
for $139 + transportation fee would be also very strong but, also a try and error game.

So why not save money back for some month and then run a 19" appliance that is matching all
your needs and perhaps something on top of speed and/or functions?
pfSense runs now their own shop also with a 19" appliance and that is perfectly matching pfsense
on.

They are all old, many of them have seen thousands and thousands of hours service. That means they are all potentially about to fail unless you can find one that has seen service in cold standby.
They aren't too fast. That may not a be a problem for your application.
They have Realtek NICs which can and often do crap out for no reason. You may be lucky though, I have yet to see that.

On the other hand they are dirt cheap and quite small for a rack mount box.  ;)
