Snort not starting

I have installed and done a basic config on snort but it will not start. I did apply a Oink code and watched the rules download and extract. What are some other troubleshooting techniques I can use to see what is happening?

Worked it a little and found a bunch of posts about memory usage. I removed Squid and Snort started up after switching to 'lowmem'. It's working like a champ.
I'm using a P3 1GHz with 512MB ram.
Is there a reason why Snort seems to be a memory hog? I do not recall it needing that much ram running in Linux.

Snort uses lots of memory on linux too.
