Public WAN IP
-
This is probably a noobish question, but I noticed that my WAN IP that is listed on the dashboard is a private IP. It is a 10.x.x.x ip and I use a 192.168.x.x ip for my LAN. My service is PPPoE. My ddns is returning a public IP. Is the dashboard supposed to have a private IP? Could this be the reason I cannot get VPN or port forwarding to work?
Thanks and sorry if this is a stupid question.

The dynamic DNS gets its information from accessing a public site which sees the final public address that your LAN + PPPoE gets as it goes out of your ISP. That public site (e.g. http://checkip.dyndns.org/ ) sends back the public IP. The dynamic DNS code sets that public IP with your dynamic DNS provider.
On the PPPoE link it seems that your ISP is giving out private IPv4 address space. That will really stuff you up if you want to offer remotely accessible services (Road Warrior OpenVPN server, web site…). The traffic will get to that (probably shared) public IP belonging to your ISP. It won't get forwarded across your PPPoE circuit to your pfSense WAN - thus giving you no chance to receive it and respond.
I would ask your ISP what the deal is, and see if they will give you a public IP, or port forward some ports to you from their front-end public IP or...

Thanks for the response, that was what I had suspected. Sounds like I will be making a call to my ISP today…

Sounds like maybe your ISP modem is doing NAT? If you can get in to configure it, try setting it to bridge mode.

Thanks! I called my ISP and they said that they charge $5/mo for a "static" ip. I still have the same private ip as my WAN address but I have a new public ip. VPN is working too. My speeds didn't drop off this evening like they usually do either.
$5 well spent IMO.

$5/mo is pretty cheap for a static IPv4 address. I'm being charged $20/mo for that with Verizon FIOS (who doesn't yet do IPv6).
