Performance Issues
-
Hello,
I'm having strange performance issues that I cannot put my thumb on.
2.2.4-RELEASE (amd64)
built on Sat Jul 25 19:57:37 CDT 2015
FreeBSD 10.1-RELEASE-p15Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E3-1246 v3 @ 3.50GHz
Current: 436 MHz, Max: 3491 MHz
2 CPUs: 1 package(s) x 2 core(s)
ESXi 5.5
1 GB RAM, 19% in use
1 GB disk space, 55% in use - running from SSD
/var/run (ufs in RAM): 3% of 3.4MInternet speed - 75/75 FiOS
Upon startup, everything works fine. After a while, I get intermittent spikes in processor usage, and the firewall will drop the internet connection anywhere from a couple of seconds to as much as 30 seconds. Once this happens for the first time, CPU usage will go from hovering around 0% up to approximately 30% on a constant basis, and the intermittent spikes will still occur. It seems I can get this pattern started by moving lots of traffic after the reboot, but even if I don't it will eventually start happening. Once I reboot, everything is back to normal for a while.
Currently I have the pfBlockerNG package installed and running, but this was happening before I installed the package. It was also happening on the previous version of pfSense.
Anybody have a solution? I work from home, and when this starts causing issues, it kills my VPN connection and my VoIP fades in and out. I need my connection to be reliable, but I also need robust protection for my network without spending a fortune.

Anything showing up in the logs that corresponds to your observations?
Are you logging all firewall rules to get a good overview of whats happening traffic wise across your network?
