Internet Speed Slow when connected to router at 1000mbps
-
Hello everyone,
I have a fiber line that comes into a 8 port cisco switch that then goes to a pfsense router. This hand off is at 1000mbps. I then go from the pfsense to a Ubiquiti tough switch 8 pro. Now I have the pfsense left to auto on the port as it came and when plugged into the toughswitch my internet drags to 18mbps. Both pfsense and tough switch read 1000mbps connection. When I set the toughswitch to 100mbps half duplex my speed goes to the 80Mbps as it should be. Now I have flow control off on the Tough switch and I have tried it with it on. My question is why does it drag on 1000mbps? I have asked the ubiquiti company about the tough switch and tried everything they have said, they say it is the pfsense if my port is reading 1000mbps with no errors on sending and receiving. Please Help
Thanks,
Wayne.

I have seen some horror stories about the unifi switches… Have you checked it with a different switch be it dumb/smart/managed? Are you saying both pfsense shows 1000 full and toughswitch shows 1000full when both set to auto? Are you seeing any errors on the interfaces either in pfsense or on the switch
You can view errors via netstat in pfsense or on the interface status page you can see col or in/out errors

I have a fiber line that comes into a 8 port cisco switch that then goes to a pfsense router.
How the fiber line comes into your household? At the end as a RJ45 or as a SFP jack? Or why a switch in
front of the pfSense box? This hand off is at 1000mbps.
For sure now one want demand this.
I then go from the pfsense to a Ubiquiti tough switch 8 pro.
Which pfSense box? Self made? And when yes with what NICs or LAN Ports
this pfSense box is sorted? Now I have the pfsense left to auto on the port as it came and when plugged into the toughswitch my internet drags to 18mbps.
This might be also tend on the offered services, enabled features or used options on the pfSense box.
Both pfsense and tough switch read 1000mbps connection. When I set the toughswitch to 100mbps half duplex my speed goes to the 80Mbps as it should be.
Are you able to insert the incoming fiver line directly into the pfSense box? And if yes what you get then for
results? Could it be that you might tune your NICs a bit, or did you take the switch in front of the pfSense
box to beware of the only running on one CPU core pppoe? And without the UBNT switch connecting the
devices behind the pfSense box directly to the pfSense box, what you get then? Now I have flow control off on the Tough switch and I have tried it with it on. My question is why does it drag on 1000mbps?
The possibility could be the only on one core working pppoe connection in pfsense and the CPU is to
lame or not strong enough. But mostly it is more tended on the circumstance that there is a auto negotiation
miss match.I have asked the ubiquiti company about the tough switch and tried everything they have said, they say it is the pfsense if my port is reading 1000mbps with no errors on sending and receiving. Please Help
Really, who is telling around that his own equipment is the guilty or faulty one??????
Would you be able to get a cheap media converter to set it up in front of the pfSense box to change it
against the switch? Or connect directly the fiber line into the pfSense box? -
When you go to UBNT ToughSwitch forum, you'll easily see that the thing is abandoned, buggy like hell piece of junky HW that's best ditched into garbage. The buffer-bloat you mention is something that completely kills the HW usability, there's about ~50 page thread about that: https://community.ubnt.com/t5/ToughSwitch/The-new-and-improved-low-throughput-thread/m-p/904008#U904008
(and, that's just a sequel to the original one, which got closed with UBNT sticking their heads into the sand.)
Noone ever fixed the firmware. Noone ever fixed many of other critical issues there. (I for one wasted about a week trying to get DHCP working over VLANs on that UBNT ShitSwitch.)
You are totally wasting your time trying to blame pfSense for this shit. UBNT make very decent wifi stuff. As for ToughSwitch, it's utter junk.

I am not trying to blame pfsense. I will say this is the best router I've ever seen and was recommened to me to replace the ubiquiti Edge router lite 3 ( which we won't even go there ). But I do agree with you, the ToughSwitches and Routers provided by UBNT are total shit and support is to boot.

What I would do is test it without that ubnt switch… What happens then? Do you need the POE that the ts-8-pro, if not I know for sure you could pick up a sg300-10 for same pricepoint as the ts-8-pro.. I just checked ts-8-pro on amazon and is 180$..

Netonix is being widely recommended (at the UBNT forums) as replacement for the UBNT crappy switches if you need POE. 8x gig + 2SPF is ~$250 - http://www.netonix.com/wisp-switch/ws-10-250-ac.html
-
Thank you all so much for your help and support. That netonix is the way I would love to go. We have so many ubiquiti toughswitches though. I was hoping to find a way to make them work. So I can't remove the TS from the equation at this time.
-
well put a switch between then… Did you validate by taking it out of the equation just for a test?
-
I haven't had the chance to yet, it has been raining non stop and my tower is outside with a box. I will as soon as it lets up. :)

I was hoping to find a way to make them work.
The only way to make them "work" is the one you mentioned in the OP. I.e., force the ports to 100Mbit.
