Email or PM on New Release
-
Hello,
Awesome project, love pfSense! I've been watching for some 1.3 Release Candidate goodness for a LONG time now. I was just wondering why you guys don't have PM or email notification for the new releases**?** It's not a huge deal, but it would get that check pfsense entry every week out of my Smartphone Calendar! I don't subscribe to any other newsletters or notifications on any other forum, but I would signup for this one ;-)Les Garten
p.s. I have a sneaking suspicion that nobody on this list would object!

There is a blog.
http://blog.pfsense.org/You can subscribe to the RSS feed of it.

I would love to see an announce-type read-only mailing list, even if it was the same as the blog…

And, instead of speaking of beta versions, what do you think about when we have a final version of PFsense?
Everybody knows that the 1.2 final, was more a hurry to finalise something, then a real final release, as, the 1.2RC3 is better and more stable than the final release, as we can see on this forum, having several people wising to go back,
And about to the promissed 1.2.1 final???
Is, the PFSense team only able to porduce beta versions????
I Am sorry for beeing so direct, and sincere!!!!
Regards.

…......
Please describe how 1.2RC3 is more stable than 1.2final...

I realise the question was posed to the OP.
Nevertheless, my understanding is that those who are after 1.2RC3 are doing so because the default kernel configuration changed for 1.2 RC4 and 1.2 final. Some hardware won't boot on the 'newer' kernel configuration - which means people boot 1.2 RC3 and install it, then upgrade to 1.2 final leaving the SMP kernel selected.
Future releases will be based around a newer underlying OS; 1.2.1 will be based on FreeBSD 6.3 - that will likely change the situation with regard to this relatively narrow selection of troublesome hardware. It should hopefully be for the better, but there's always some idiosyncratic hardware out there!

There is an announcements mailing list, it's listed on the website. Apparently it needs to be more prominent. :)

Uh, there are no issues in 1.2 that don't exist in all the RC versions (and there are no significant problems in 1.2, 1.2.1 will fix some edge case bugs).
The only reason I have seen anyone want to go back to one of the RC's is for hardware that doesn't work in FreeBSD unless you're using a SMP kernel. The live CD switched to uniprocessor by default (and has switched back to SMP post-1.2) in RC4, and we found out later of the FreeBSD compatibility problems. Everyone I know of who has done that then upgraded to 1.2 release after installing using the older live CD. There are several people who have done that. 1.2 final release has been downloaded more than a half million times, if there really was a regression between one of the RC's and 1.2 we would have not "several" but thousands of people on here talking about it.
If you can quantify a true regression, please start a new thread describing it. There are no known ones, and none of the several hundred thousand other people who have tried 1.2 have found one, so I very seriously doubt if there are any unless it's an exceptionally unusual edge case.

Is there an archive for the announce list? I don't think it gets the content posted to the blog… I guess if I could figure out how to convert the RSS feed to email...
-
It doesn't get all the blog posts, just release announcements and anything else major. I don't believe it's archived anywhere.
If you want email notification of blog posts, this looks like it should do just that:
