PfSense 1.3 RoadMap
-
Hi,
I'm very interested in pfSense to replace my existing firewall but would prefer pfSense 1.3. I would like to avail for the Commercial Support but at this time I'm still unsure when the next release will be. I can't wait that long…
I hope you could give us at least a RoadMap for the future release of pfSense! A progress status about the development version and a list new features we can expect for the next release will be great.
I hope someone can shed light unto this topic.
TIA

Have a look at the pfSense Blog on the main homepage.

As always "When it's ready"
Personally I've placed following bet's at the local bookie:
1.2.1 snapshots 2008
1.2.1 final 2009
1.3 snapshots 2009
1.3 final 2010Most wanted feature "improved multi wan"
CNR

What features, exactly, are missing from 1.2 that preclude you from migrating to that version with commercial support?
-
The pfSense team doesn't publish any advance roadmaps of release times. They are working on 1.3 and when its ready for public consumption, they will release it. It'll be awhile as many key features are still works in progress.

One of the features of Redmine (http://www.redmine.org/ - part of our git conversion) is to allow us to create development road maps. So that will be coming once Bill has us up on git.
The latest update is up on the blog.
Why isn't 1.2 suitable?

well if its 2010 that'd be 1.5 years at soonest, 2 years if its mid 2010
oh well, my 1.2 install is pretty solid, probably wont even have to reboot until 2010 when 1.3 is out ;D -
Perry is just making stuff up. :) The reality is we don't have a road map right now, but look for one in the next couple months. 1.2.1 will be final this summer, 1.3 is up in the air because we haven't finalized exactly what it will contain yet.

We wouldn't want our major competitors to start their copiers so we do not publish time lines of our plans :)
The REAL reality is that devs work on whatever they want to and we do not really hold them to a time line. This might change when we move to redmine.

I think if you issued that statement before, then it would make more sense as to why it is never conveyed. Now that you said that - it makes complete sense and understandable. I would agree - staying ahead of the competitors.
