Usb stick with NanoBSD is really slow
-
Hey
I made a USB stick with the NanoBSD version of pfsense and it runs great as expected… The only down side is that its really slow when booting or changing settings. To be fair... the boot time i dont care about... Bet when i make a change, like adding a firewall/NAT rule... then i have to wait like minimum of 10 minutes for the page to reload and the changes to be added... and that i dont get... if booting takes like 10 minutes i dont get why changes so small take so long. is there something im missing?
Would it be faster is i get the normal pfsense installer (iso) and install that to the usb stick instead of a HDD... would that be faster when changing things around?

Go into Diagnostics: NanoBSD options and tick "Keep media mounted read/write at all times."

All USB Flash Drives are not created equal. Use USB 3 Flash Drive even if system only has USB 2 ports.
I've been running full install on USB 2/3 Flash Drives for years and never had any of them be that slow. Not even to boot. Let alone save config changes.
If you do decide to go with full install on flash drive be sure to enable ram disk for /tmp & /var.

Thanks, this fixed it… now its at normal speed :)
