Updating a Netgate Device from 2.1.5 -> 2.2.6
-
I am looking to upgrade our Netgate Device from version 2.1.5 to Version 2.2.6. Not ready to jump to 2.3 seeing the issues right now.
I have never done this before and the person who I am asking to help me is dragging his feet. Seeing it it would be possible to go solo. Is there material out there that would give me the information to do it correctly and also to make certain I can recover if it does not work. If there is any other information you need please let me know.
Information - Netgate device
Model: FW-7551B-NG1
Ver.: V0.1Current version: 2.1.5-Release
NanoBSD Size : 4g -
well it basically depends on the packages that are installed.
in many cases it would be better to go 2.3 instead of 2.2.6, unless you are running packages that are not available (yet) in 2.3

The only package that we have installed is OpenVPN Client Export Utility.
Reading through the forums it looks like there are issues with 2.3 that might need to be worked out. I was hoping that going to 2.2.6 would be more tried and true at this point especially coming from version 2.1.5. I could be wrong. We are running our phones and network traffic through this unit and if it gets messed up I am going to hear about it.

production environments can always be tested in a virtual machine

Since I am green at updating the firmware where would I go to find out information about running this in a Virtual environment. I am assuming we are talking about setting up a spare computer with extra network cards?
Thanks for your help.

you could set it up all virtual, with virtual network cards & virtual clients. this can be done on any laptop/desktop that is less then 8yrs old.
pfSense config(=1 file) can be downloaded from diagnostics–>backup/restore
