SG5100 cant update from 2.5.x to 21x
-
I cant update my SG5100, its stuck on 2.5.x which seems to cause buffering while streaming from plex after 30 minutes.
I would like to update to 21x since my SG3100 works perfectly on 21x firmware.i have tried this guide https://docs.netgate.com/pfsense/en/latest/troubleshooting/upgrades.html
but still 21x firmware does not show up in the webgui after days of waiting and rebooting the router. -
@mosquitor It's actually on 2.5 already? That's the CE version, it shouldn't have upgraded to that by itself. Did you ever install the non-Factory Edition of a previous pfSense version?
You can get Plus firmware from Netgate via a free ticket at go.netgate.com.

i might have done that a long time ago but not recently and as you can see i have no option to downgrade.

@mosquitor Downgrading would mean downgrading FreeBSD in most cases. Netgate is planning a CE-to-Plus upgrade at some point, which I assume would be paid, but like I said you can just get the Plus firmware from them, format/install, and restore from backup.

@steveits i dont know what you mean by plus. i just want the same type of firmware my 3100 has. my 3100 lets me downgrade from 21x to 2.4.x and back if i want. my 5100 has no button to go back to 2.4.x even when i change the update branch. i need to go back to 2.4.x from 2.5 so that the branch for 21x will show up as an option.

PfSense Plus is the new name for the Factory Edition which comes on Netgate hardware. Older versions had the same numbering scheme but starting in February Plus used 21.02, vs. 2.5.0.
Are you saying it works to downgrade, or that you see "previous stable version" as an option in the menu, as you posted above? That option exists so one can still install packages before upgrading pfSense (see my sig). I've never seen an option to actually downgrade a live router, other than discussions here to reinstall. But, that's not what you're looking for anyway.
Overall, one can't migrate/upgrade from the Community Edition to Plus yet.

yes i see see "previous stable version" as an option in the menu, as you posted above but i cant go abck to get the other update to 21.x are you saying i need to install the plus firmware now? and how exactly can i do that?
-
@steveits nevermind i contacted support and got the firmware like you said. i have successfully installed 21.x. thanks.

@steveits I have a Netgate router based on the Super Micro C2758, I forget the official model number. It is currently on 2.4.5-RELEASE-p1 (amd64). Previously, I was only being offered a 2.5.x upgrade path. However, this morning I noticed on the Dashboard it is now offering me 21.05.2. My question is, can I upgrade directly to that version from the version I am currently on?

Netgate routers will upgrade to pfSense Plus, the successor name to pfSense Factory Edition, which has a new numbering scheme. Yes you can upgrade from 2.4 to 21.x. See the upgrade guide for notes on upgrading from older versions.
I would have expected your router to show you 21.02 not 2.5.0, but that's immaterial now if it's offering 21.05.
