I see RC in the name ;-)

The main question remains the same
Will there finally be pfSense+ install images available for download for non-Netgate hardware ? -

Hello, could you explain me a bit more? You mean a fresh install image? Because upgrading in place, works fine from older release?

@rcoleman-netgate Today I see that 23.01-RC with build 23.01.r.20230202.0019 is available. So this is the "release" version?
It's a release candidate, not a "release" yet. Meaning if we don't find any major release blocking problems in this build, it will be effectively identical to 23.01-RELEASE. If we do find a problem, that means new builds, more testing, and so on.

Question... This will be my first time upgrading my 6100. Do I need to remove some (or all) of the packages before attempting the upgrade? Or should I be good to perform an in-place upgrade w/o needing to do this? I assume that some of the packages will be upgraded to support the new OS version as well. Thanks.
-
@defenderllc This is a Release Candidate not a final release. Upgrade at your own risk -- there is no "clean image" option for an RC. If it fails you will need to reimage the system from an image you get at https://go.netgate.com so plan in advance and always make backups.
ZFS does some snapshotting so if you do the upgrade and it works but something just doesn't quite work right you can roll back.
I do not have a document handy on that but @stephenw10 might be able to point you somewhere.
Regardless... always make backups. RCs are still development releases and do not carry support from Netgate

@rcoleman-netgate Understood on this being a RC. Just wanted to know if I should uninstall the existing packages before doing the upgrade - in general - release or RC. Thanks.

In general (even not specific to this upgrade), that is the best practice. Remove packages before upgrading, upgrade, then reinstall packages.

Do we have a target release date yet? I know it has to be close.
You can get some idea by the remaining open issues for that release. In this case see https://redmine.pfsense.org/projects/pfsense/issues?query_id=186
