SG1100 Upgraded to RC 23.01, device no longer boots

I tried to upgrade earlier today from 22.05. While the install said it succeeded, the device wouldn't reboot. Looking at the installation log, i saw that during the EFI upgrade it said it was out of storage space. Everything else during the upgrade appears to be successful. Looking at the boot process via the console port it says: efi_load_pe: invalid dos signature, then application terminated. The device no longer boots. Prior to the upgrade about 25% of storage was being used. Thoughts?

@mt835 Reinstall SG-1100 and try again. I had a similar experience trying to upgrade to 23.1-BETA.

Will that upgrade issue be resolved, or will it be mandatory to reinstall on a SG-1100 ?

@sgw I think it's impossible to resolve, if the unit does not boot. That is, reinstall is mandatory.

@pfsjap Well, they could maybe fix the issue in the upgrade procedure or something.

We test on SG-1100 units and have a lot of them around (in the lab, with various employees, etc.). We have not seen a 23.01 upgrade fail like that here as far as I'm aware, so this could be an issue with the disk, a filesystem problem, or something along those lines. Wiping and reloading would ensure a fresh start, and would give the opportunity to move to ZFS if they haven't already. At the point they were at, if it doesn't boot, there isn't anything to be learned from it without booting from install media anyhow.

I did restore to 22.05 from the image (to ZFS) that support gave me and I tried again and was successfully able to upgrade to 23.01 RC today. The only thing I noticed was the black diamond status light is not lit. Other than that it is working fine.

My own SG1100 is on ZFS already. I think I had to reinstall back then with the latest major release or so ;-)
Usually I tell myself to be patient and let the others test first ... then I change my mind and go for it. Checking the reports of others first, then checking my fallback hardware (SG1000 ... yes, I know: won't run 23.01 at all) before considering installing the RC.

I had the exact same issue with an SG-2100. Upgrade appeared to be installing but device never came back up. Connecting console cable to it and checking with Putty looked like it wasn't booting at all. Just had repeating messages about BOOTP broadcasting. Had to re-image. Recommend this RC in lab only for sure.
