Is there anyway to browse by hostname when connected to remote pfsense lan over OpenVpn? I can ping by ip address but can't ping by hostname or browse shared folders unless starting the path with the ip address.

No, that relies on being within the same subnet, as multicasts are used, which do not pass through routers.
