    Diagnostics > Command Prompt > execute command ;

    kldxref /boot/kernel

    worked here and continues to work after reboot.

    if you're updating a unit remotely and rely on the VPN for contact, which obviously wont come back.

    firstly setup the watchdog on the service to restart it.

    also add a line to the crontab ;

    @reboot kldxref /boot/kernel

    this will run the command on reboot after the upgrade so that when the whatchdog restarts the service at some point it will work. after that you cna revisit the crontab and remove the line that is no longer needed.
