It is possible to install a SSL certificate issued by a real (VeriSign, Thawte, Comodo etc) Certificate Authority instead of the self-signed one? How?

I assume you mean for webGUI, not Captive Portal.  Yes, it's possible.  System->Advanced, find the SSL section paste in private and public keys in PEM format.  Not sure why you'd want to spend the money on a CA signed cert, you'd be better off running an internal CA and adding it's signing cert to your trusted root keychain.

I use a CAcert (www.cacert.org), it's free and who knows, maybe the root certificate will be included to mainstream browsers… (at the moment you have once to import the root certificate to your browser).
