Slow Wi-FI
-
Hi so I recently purchased a netgate 4100 with pfsense+. When my ISP modem is plugged into the WAN port of the pfsense router and then my pc is plugged into the lan 1 port of my pfsense router i get about 930mbps on my laptop. When I have my ISP modem plugged into WAN port of pfsense router and then my TPLink router in AP mode plugged into LAN 1 of the pfsense router from lan 1 of the TP link router I get about 380mbps on my laptop and phone. Even when my pc is the only thing connected to the wifi network it still gets 380. Is this normal? Do I have something configured wrong? My AP mode router is set to auto negotiate as well as the pfsense router. Both look like 1000mbps full duplex when I go on the pfsense GUI. The pfsense says 1000 full duplex txpause rxpause.
Now my internet doesn't feel slow or anything I just did a speedtest just to see what I was getting. Is there anything I need to be doing? I guess im fine with these speeds but if I can get them to go up I wouldnt mind that either because 380 out of a gig seems like quite a bit of a gap. Any help would be appreciated. I read all I can but I work 16 hour days and really only have so much time to read articles and follow youtube videos so I figured I would just ask and see if im missing something.

Ok so I ended up trying to change something in pfsense making lan 1 the igx thing, I lost internet connection so I had to do a factory reset and I had to use the physical buttons to do so. I hooked my laptop up to lan2 of my tplink AP and now my PC gets 912mbps and my phone on wifi gets about 400. I have no idea why this is all of a sudden?

I would have to guess it was actually connecting via wifi even with the Ethernet connected. Windows can do that quite easily if you don't disable wifi.
Either way that's a limitation in the access point not pfSense. Or the wifi link at least. It could just be the wifi protocol it's using.Steve

380mbps over your typical 2 stream AC wifi would be about right..
If you want more speed over wifi your going to need to use AX or more streams of AC.. As mentioned this has nothing to do with pfsense.
The max phy you can get with 2 streams of AC wifi is 867, but it can be lower.. Depending on distance, other interference, etc. etc. lots of variables in wifi. A rough rule of thumb is 50% of the phy is normal to see..
