      Bill,
Hope you are doing well. Have you retired fully from the Power Company yet?

Just wanted to touch bases with you on doing updates. It's been a LONG time since we talked about this but years ago (10?) you suggested doing Snort updates by making sure settings would be save after a deinstall , removing the running package then installing the new/updated package. Is this still the best/recommended practice?

      Rick

@Ramosel Snort should have a similar checkbox to this:
        5989f9ba-470d-447b-98e1-79e883c8b0ef-image.png

It is checked by default, so settings are saved.

You can just upgrade a package from pfSense's GUI without uninstalling. However a couple of notes:

        1. make sure you are installing for the correct version (see my sig)
        2. in general I'd advise making sure pfSense is up to date. Upgrading pfSense will uninstall/reinstall packages.
        3. the pfSense upgrade guide recommends uninstalling packages before a pfSense upgrade...for instance 2.6 to 2.7 changes from FreeBSD 12 to 14 and PHP 7 to 8 so it is a massive step.

Pre-2.7.2/23.09: Only install packages for your version, or risk breaking it. Select your branch in System/Update/Update Settings.
When upgrading, allow 10-15 minutes to restart, or more depending on packages and device speed.

Yes, this is still the safest method. And since the default is to save settings, it means you won't lose any previous configuration.

And "yes", I retired back in February of 2014. I worked as a contractor in a "work from home" job starting in 2015 for about 2 years, but then retired for good at the end of 2017. Just enjoying life now as an official "Old Fart" 🙂. But I have not gotten to the "you kids get off my lawn" stage yet.

I do reserve my right to complain about "the crap these days", even if I'm not all the way to "you kids get off my lawn". Oh, and both my wife and I like to complain about how much stuff costs now compared to "the good old days".
