pfBlockeNG to block ads on Youtube on TV?
-
Hi All,
Very new user to pfSense and exploring how to use pfSense with pfBlockerNG to block ads from occurring when watching YouTube on the television on a smart TV.
I've installed pfBlockerNG and I've started to take a look at the feeds available. However, I do not fully understand the extend of feeds available and how they operate.
From my understanding to block ads that would require a DNS sinkhole as when they are served they are essentially trying to a resolve a DNS before they are able to load. And if I send them to a DNS sinkhole they should be blocked or not appear visible to me.
When looking through the feeds there's a whole plethora of options available and I'm unsure where to start. Currently, the Feeds I have added are ADs and ADs_Basic under the DNSBL category.
However, after adding the two feeds, I'm still receiving ads and I'm unsure if I've done something incorrectly or if I'm missing something?
Any guidance or help with understanding this better would be greatly appreciated! :)

What if .....
While watching a video stream, on the server side, there where your video is taken from the main video file server, is adapted for your device, and then send to you, during the creation of the stream, another video, the publicity, is injected ?
There will be no DNS requests from your user's device, no connection made to other "publicity" servers ... no way to decide not to show 'that publicity' (except by you, fast forwarding ?).Or this one : what if your video stream does contain the instruction : insert a random publicity video here, and you intercept that, DNS or not, request. The video app you use also uses a script that plays this publicity video, and wen done (fully seen == showed on your device), a token is given back to the server. If the script doesn't give back the correct token, the video server refuses to play any further.
These are just two of the methods I could find while thinking about it .... and I work for a hotel, and fool around with pfSense, and use Youtube to see the latest video of the guy that found a new way to proof that the word is flat. In other words, I don't no sh*t about close to nothing.
If youtube was paying my salary, I would come with even better methods.
And all this with one common goal in mind : You consume my product ? Great : You pay.
The price you pay is part of the product : exert your ultimate consumer right that no one can take away : don't take (use) a product if you don't accept all the conditions.I have to add : I do pay Google every month that 15 € fee so the Youtube make adds 'go away'. And, oh boy, this is worth it - my opinion, way beyond what I pay for Netflix. And four more people enjoy the same Youtube experience.
I auto justify myself : I pay for the quality ^^ -
