YouTube blocked when logged out
-
Hi I have a strange problem. If I try to watch a video on YouTube it loads the side normally, but the video shows only 0-1:33 min, doesn’t start and after a while it shows an error message.
If I log into an YouTube / google account and watch the same video it works perfectly.
I already disabled and also removed pfblocker. And there are only firewall rules to prevent connections between vlans in place.
I also disabled blocking bogon networks at wan settings, but no luck.Do you have any idea what I am doing wrong?
I’m running pfsense 23.09.1-Release on an dell r210.

@harms32 Disable the offloadings:

Something is missing : your Google Youtube account is the premium one ?
If not, I suspect that Yutube tried to insert a publicity, and loading of the publicity failed.
or : not playing the publicity, or not getting the publicity, and you won't get the 'can continue' cookie.I'll say upfront : I'm making this one up. But if I was working for Youtube, that's how I would do it (so they continue to pay me (well)).

Maybe nothing.
Maybe you have another admin above your connection that want you to do a favor by blocking some 'publicity' source IPs .....
Or, the video you're watching contains ... I don't know, something else, as I don't know how video playing actually works in general, or specially with youtube ready readers : is their meta code in the video stream ? Is the browser using java or something like that ? Maybe it('s the device /software that you are using has a bug ? Does it happen on all your devices ? Your network ?What was the error shown ? Errors are very important, why not showing it ?
Example : if the error was "Your device just ran out of memory" we might be able to explain you what happens and you had a solution right away.@NightlyShark : your proposal rings a distant bell.
Can you develop ?
Your solution, if it is one, is very deeply buried in the system. Drivers don't know what Youtube is ... -

Yes.
Maybe nothing.
Maybe you have another admin above your connection that want you to do a favor by blocking some 'publicity' source IPs .....I think this was kind of the case. I did not change anything and the problem disappeared.
But thank you all for your suggestions. @Gertjan @NightlyShark -
@Gertjan It could actually boil down to the DNS server used... If it's PfBlockerNG, PiHole, AdGuard or a customized OpenDNS profile... Certain CDNs that interplay with usage trackers and adverts might fail...
-
@NightlyShark
Pfblockerng was used. But I removed it temporarily for testing. It did not help. -
@harms32 I don't suppose you also run Snort/Suricata in block mode?
-
@harms32 Also, after removing it temporarily, did you perform an
ipconfig /flushdns
and
netsh winsock reset
and reboot?
-
@harms32 Re-read your opening post... Also try performing a deep cleanup of your browser cache.
-
No Suricata/ Snort

No I did not. But I will keep it in mind if the problem comes back.
As of right now, everything works.
Thanks again @NightlyShark
