Can we get an update from pfsense team on 24.08 status?
-
@michmoor PM sent.

It's fun to keep getting news letters about how great the new version of pfsense is, and yet we are almost 2 months without updates and its starting to feel like netgate fired their entire dev team, never in over a decade have they been so quiet on the forums.
Can we tag this marketing woman, maybe she will have some insight into whats going on....
-
@behemyth she actually replied to me this afternoon. Let me give you a screenshot!
-
@DefenderLLC Thats not her, Sharon Snyder is the one who sends out the marketing emails.
I've never heard of a Glen Shok before lol...

Actually I didn’t pay attention to the name until after I posted the screenshot. They did respond immediately though which I found interesting. His/her reply was pretty funny.

not aged well my post. and not surprising.
-
Not surprising, they have released a single update this entire year now, and with all the vulnerabilities that have been discovered, for a security focused company that just blows my mind.
I'm also shocked how tight lipped they are being. There has to be something going on behind the scenes. I wonder if some of the main developers left.
I know many of us are looking at other products. This is rediculous.
-
They are rushing to complete this Multi-Instance Management (MiM) solution. It's a little late if you ask me. UniFi is lightyears ahead of Netgate when it comes to remote management and site-to-site automation.
IMHO, Netgate should have completed 24.08 and then added the MiM on the next release which probably won't even be done until the next version was due to come out anyway.
I recently sold my Netgate 6100 MAX to a forum member a few weeks ago in favor of the new UniFi Enterprise Fortress Gateway. Being able to inspect SSL/TLS traffic for $2k license-free was too good to pass up. That also makes the optional Proofpoint ET Pro subscription worth the $75/mo. since IDS/IPS will actually inspect the encrypted traffic now.
I love pfSense, but I needed something more. Say what you want about Ubiquiti, but they have really come around in the past two years.

@behemyth Reading from what Netgate folks have mentioned on Reddit (a bit of reading the tea leaves) there are about 100 devs working at the company. Safe to say the majority of them are involved in the MIM project which is one if not the biggest project they have ever worked on. Netgate placed the due date on 24.08, not the consumer so the delay is on them. They are probably so far into development that they cant pull the code and just release 24.08 hence the almost 2 months delay.
That said, there isn't anything pending that I'm personally waiting for and there are no security concerns so might as well still wait.
I have to say the warm and fuzzies i do not have on this........edit: Its my view that Ubiquity is probably the closest competitor to pfSense in the SMB space and now they are targeting more mid tier Enterprise customers who require dynamic routing and TLS inspection and content control. Its going to be a very interesting next few years but competition is heating up

I do miss that tab always being opened on my browser!
And you're right... The next few years will be be interesting!

@DefenderLLC Just fine just fine

And it's spelled Ubiquiti. We can blame your spellcheck. :)

I agree with this. Get 24.08 out, and then you can release this MIM stuff in 25.02. That way you have a long time before another release comes out, and some of the issues in 24.03 are fixed. I know one of the big things is Kea and DNS.

New snapshot w/o MiM. They invite you to production meetings or something?
-
No, Defender and I are just speaking common sense.
I completely get wanting to add in new features. Someone that does business with them obviously want this MIM feature, or they wouldn't be putting this much time into it..
But you cant add major new features at the expense of releasing updates and keeping your product stable. Ask some of the major network companies how that's gone for them - even they are changing how they release code.
I'm pretty sure they have only released one major release this year, back in March. That's terrible coming from a security minded company.
I'm glad to see at least someone is reading what we are saying and taking it into consideration.

@behemyth
24.08 is a very ambitious release.
Injecting APIs into aging/legacy firewall code aint easy. I will say this...
The unifi product line had a controller as the base of its product line. Cant really operate the unifi products without a unifi network application.
Palo Alto didnt release Panorama on the first release of PanOS. It took hundreds of devs and years to develop (and Panorama is still buggy AF).Same with Fortigate.
The scale of these companies compared to Netgate is quite large so with that i get why its taking so long and if we are taking bets, why there will most likely be a delay in MIM.
That said, if the marketing promise of pfsense plus is 3x releases a year and we ending September with only 1x release.....Gotta say..Not a good look. Im trying to be objective here but you look at the competitive landscape and the mind starts to wonder... -

Especially Panorama - something you and I are in every single day at work. LOL
