If I follow this tut, but use a nic with two ports. Can I disable the second adapter in windows. Then plug a wireless access point into my second port. And pfsense would manage it as a second lan connection? Or would the adapter need to be enabled for pfsense to be able to manage it?

The network adapter has to be enabled in Windows, but you should remove the TCP/IP stack from it as descriped in the tutorial.
In Virtual Box you have to bridge the adapter to pfSense. Now it can only be used by pfSense, Windows can do nothing on it without an activated network stack. -
That makes sense. Thanks for clearing that up.
