Looking for understanding of the routes that are added

The following routes are added to my pfSense box when I have a Remote Access server configured.


10.81.254.0/24 10.81.254.2 UGS 0 1500 ovpns3	
10.81.254.1 link#10 UHS 0 16384 lo0	
10.81.254.2 link#10 UH 0 1500 ovpns3

I don’t understand the use of 10.81.254.2 as the gateway for the 10.81.254.0/24 network , as that is the IP address of the first client to connect.

It is just the way OpenVPN works. That route gets traffic for the /24 into OpenVPN. From there OpenVPN does the right thing.
