Slow GUI

I am not sure any more what to do. I have chose old Pentium II 433 MHz processor and 256 MB RAM with two Ethernet cards (one 10/100 another one 10/100/1000) for a firewall in high school. On 10/100 eth is WAN port to ADSL bridge (3Mb/512kb) internet connection. On 10/100/1000 eth I have configured 3 vlan's (LAN, DMZ and classrooms) and this 3 vlan's are connected on gigabit port of 26 port switch (24 copper and 2 dual personality).
pfSense version is 1.2RC2.
Problem is slow GUI. Not only slow, it is not shown at all when there is some not so heavy traffic. I have taught that processor or disk is to slow so i have changed this platform to dual processor (1GHz) with 256MB RAM. Only giga eth card remained the same. But problem still persisted. On statistics page memory is only sometimes used bit more than 50% and processor goes to 40%.
It is confusing. It is first time that I am using 1 GB card and vlan's. Is problem maybe there?
On any time there are no more than 35 computers online and number of connections is less than 1000.
Please advise.

I will try it tomorow morning. I have heavyer load in my firm but no delays at all (celeron 433 + 128 MB RAM, two Alliedtelesin AT2500 cards but no VLAN's)

I think you may be underestimating the load the inter-VLAN traffic is creating. Typically what you describe is a sign of an extremely overloaded box, and enabling polling will mask that.

Yes, I am aware of that. I have thought that dual proc system will soften that problem. My be that giga card is bottle neck. I didn't hawe time to do something today but on monday …

You are most likely being flooded by interrupts. Buy a Intel server class card that has interrupt mitgitation. Also going with a PCI-E architecture will help out a lot.

Is there a way to monitor interrupts? It looks to me that even 2 comps can bring this GUI to halt but traffic is unaffected.
This is project for high school and I have donated my work time and spending more money is not an option for now. They depend on government money and it is very tight fond on which they operate.

It didn't solve. I will change second eth wich is Netgear GIGA card for 10/100 Intel and try then.
My be this reltek based card is buggy when VLAN's are involved.Sasa
