Is the interface field needed when setting up a static route? Or if my understanding of static routes is wrong, please explain.

The nature of a static route is that you say that access to network X is through host Y.  Connectivity to host Y follows the usual path through the routing table.  This means that if it's not on a directly connected network, or with an explicit route to it's network defined, the default gateway will be used.

Ok, that was my understanding also. The point is that adding a static route has an interface on it which seems to be redundant. It doesnt matter which interface is chosen, does it?
