Maximum new connections / per second

Hi,

I'm attempting to put a firewall rule in place stop SSH brute force attacks.

I've set the Destination port to 22, and set a limit of 5 connections per 120 seconds.

This works great, however, the block seems to last for a very long time (hours)?  Can someone tell me what sets how long the block on the host will last?
