Pfsense 1.2.3 & virtualbox on Ubuntu 10.10 64bit fatal error during fdisk/format

Are you adding the VM as a 64-bit OS or a 32-bit OS? 1.2.3 is 32-bit only. It should run on a 64-bit host, but better safe than sorry.
Also the specific error message would help. Get a screencap of the vm window when it appears.
I am using 32bit template FREEBSD. v2 is also 32bit and it works.

Maybe it is problem in newer versions of VBox some kind of regression but I am still curios ;)

Same problem here, fresh squeeze amd64 install, virtualbox 3.2.12. I create the machine with FreeBSD template (not 64bits), the live cd runs but when the install is going to format virtualbox crashes.

If you're on an amd64 host OS, why not also make it a 64-bit VM and run an amd64 pfSense snapshot?

In my case the problem was solved enabling in the bios the AMD-V option. Now it formats and install without problem. (i was curious about the icon disabled in the vm and search about it)

There are plenty of advantages, the same advantage of running any 64-bit OS over 32-bit, plus it's the same as the host OS which may offer some advantage to the emulation involved.

Very incorrect. There are plenty of people who need certain features it has that use it in production successfully. It is not "just for playing" these days. It is almost to RC stage, and quite stable. I've been running my home router on it since April, and a significant number of our customers run it in production as well. There may be a snapshot here or there to avoid because they are problematic, but the risk in a VM is practically nil. Snapshot the VM, upgrade, if it doesn't work right, roll back to the previous snapshot. You can test it in a second VM even.

I am using now 64bit beta4. Basic stuff works I am trying now advanced stuff. Dyndns is working now in new firmware.
1st compare to pf 32bit v1.x it needs more memory for my setup (256MB vs 160MB; no problem every system now has 2GB :) )ps: v1.2.3 is working width new BIOS. VBox 4 also works fine ;)
