      Current system is:

      cable bb -> wireless outer -> 2xEth and 3xWireless

      I want to try out pfsense, ntop etc. and I was wondering it should be possible to make a virtual machine on a pc running pfsense and make that the gateway for all internet access on the lan/wan.

      Is this possible?

          And indeed, there is an entire sub-forum on using virtual platforms.  I'd recommend you read the threads there.

            I believe that pf should not be run in a vm for the same reasons as there will not be FreePFNAS. But thats just my opinion.
