Last I heard the publisher was working with different electronic options, but at this rate the 2.0 book will be out before the electronic copies happen.  ;D

Of course if you want a PDF now, you can get one (as you pointed out) for €55, or you could just get a commercial support subscription  :P

Has the book become freely available now? If so, great.

          No, it is not free.

(I removed your link, since it was a link to an unauthorized copy)

…don't mean to "attack" you apmuthu, but I figured I say something about those wanting all for free, as in pdf'ing books...  I am new to pfSense, but not new to life, so won't stand on this soapbox for long... pfSense is free already, much work has gone and is going into it's developing... such as most of the work by the Open Source community.  Publishing the book (pdf or hardcopy) and asking for some cash in return is a small way to get something back for all the free work.  In my opinion it is peanuts for what you are getting in pfSense.

Reason I am a bit peaved, is I know another "freeloader" who downloads free Windows software and uses it, books, music, etc. and calls me an idiot for using Linux, bying music CDs, etc. and spending the time trying to figure things out...  Just because pirated stuff is made available, it does not mean that it is proper to use it -- I bet you'd be peaved if your work got stolen and was widely used, and you got nothing for it...

njaimo - I assume then when you say free Windows software you meant to say pirated software? I use a lot of legitimately free software (OpenOffice, Firefox etc) on Windows and there's nothing wrong with that ;)

(I do agree with the overall point of your thread, I just thought a little clarity was called for before this thread turned into a flamewar)

…yes, pirated, as in MS Windows 7, MS Windows 2008 Server, MS Windows Office... he's got all three...  I did not mean free Open Source software for the Windows OS...

…got my copy of the book from Amazon last week.  Are things going to change much in pfSense 2.0 ?

The fundamentals of network won't change, and there are several areas that are the same or similar, but there are a lot of changes in 2.0. The book for 2.0 will be coming, but it won't be any time soon (perhaps a year or so would be an aggressive estimate at this stage)

I didn't see it mentioned here, but Amazon is selling it for the nook now for $30. (assuming epub format or similar) I thought i'd let you know in case this isn't supposed to be available digitally. Otherwise, neat :-) Especially since "there's an app for that"

Just purchased the physical copy myself however :-) I personally like having the physical book, but it would be "convenient" to have a digital copy to quickly reference away from home/work.

Yeah we just got the Kindle version going a couple weeks ago. That's a good way to get it, too. I still prefer dead trees for such things, but PDF/Kindle/etc are good for searching.

What's the general opinion of the Kindle version of the 'pfsense definitive guide'?
The only review specific to the kindle on Amazon says it's a poor experience.. so can anyone recommend either the kindle version over the paperback?

I have the paperback and its fantastic.  I can't imagine that the Kindle version would be a problem though, Kindle books are generally very good.

It's ugly at times, but I like it quite a bit.  Can't wait for the new version though so the features described/listed match the version I'm running.  :)

That to me sounds like the kindle version is 'OK' but has some rough edges… just want to make sure that I don't end up buying the paperback after buying the kindle version.

Would just like to add: money is burning in my pocket to buy a v2.0 of the book, preferably a PDF, but paper still works for me :)

I tried to buy the kindle version of it tonight, but for some reason it isn't available anymore for Kindle (as far as I can tell).

Amazon had flagged some formatting issues in the book, last I heard the publisher was working to fix it up and get it posted again. It looks like the Kindle version is available again now.
