PfSense as a wireless client, not AP?
-
Can I use a pfSense box (ALIX + Wireless, for instance) where the "WAN" connection is the wireless NIC connecting to another AP? So the ALIX becomes a client, but I still want full routing, firewall and NAT through the ALIX as a firewall.
ALIX LAN = private LAN
ALIX Wireless = Public WAN -
Yes, AFAIK. It was mentioned in the phone tethering threads for people do this instead of trying to plug in via USB.

Yes this is possible.
If you're using one of the supported WLAN cards you can even run the card as client for the WAN and at the same time as AP for local clients. -

Where is a good place to buy a kit already made up with the appropriate wireless mini-pci card & antennas in it? I need something fairly quickly.

OK, I got all the hardware. Which mode do I put the Atheros NIC in to make it work as a client?
- Infrastructure (BSS)
- Ad-Hoc (IBSS)
- Access Point

BSS
(why not just google it? O_o)
