I tried to use pfsense 1.2.3-REL to use my crappy built-in prism2 card (802.11b) to act at the WAN interface to connect to another wireless device. Each time, I have set everything up, but pfsense fails to associate with the wireless device. For grins and giggle, I thought I would so the same experiment under m0n0wall. Surprising, it worked flawlessly! So why would I be having issues on the pfsense side to get the wireless card to associate? pfsense does see the prism2 card (identified as wi0), but it will not associate.

I am hoping that someone can point me to the issue. I am going to try pfsense one more time, see if I can get working correctly. I guess in theory, I could keep using m0n0wall, but then I would have wasted $35 for the Pfsense book… :)

Have you tried a pfSense 2.0 BETA snapshot build? It uses a newer version of FreeBSD which has more up to date device drivers than pfSense 1.2.3.
