Inexpensive Web based radius server - Any other recommendations?
-
For those that do not have time to try and setup freeradius or know very little about linux and want a very inexpensive solution. I installed CentOS as a virtual machine and the vendor logged in remotely and installed the software. for $119 you get 50 NAS and 2000 users. I use this as a hosted solution for my different customers and they can log in with their own credentials via the web interface and manage their own users. I use mikrotik and pfsense as clients…. I have had it in production for about 6 months now....

Just built out an alternative radius solution with web management which is windows based….. $199.00 unlimited NAS/Users... will report back after testing

This sounds great, i am interested in this. Is that unlimited one for $199 a monthly cost? or is that yearly? or a one off payment?

Just followed the link it seems to be one off

http://www.evolynx.com/ is the windows based solution for those not comfortable with Linux.

Looks good.. from their site it seems that it is rather limited with pfSense.. seems to work fully only with Mikrotik.. is that something that can be used alongside pfSense?
-
How do you define limited? They may be referring to 1.2.3. I have used mikrotik mainly but recently deployed with pfSense. I am using portal on LAN with mac passthru for locally attached devices. Radius with has given me no issues. I am using static WAN though…..

I think 1.2.3 did not let you define the ip presented to the radius server.
-
I would be curious if pfSense 2.0 could be used as a virtual radius server to manage remote clients….

I was just going by the NAS Compatibility table on their site: http://www.dmasoftlab.com/cont/radman#comp
Can i use Mikrotik alongside pfsense? I actually havent used any Mikrotik devices before.. so not really sure what they actually do.. i am thinking they are AP's? Or is it a firewall/gateway like pfSense?

I have used them as both routers and AP's. I used them for radius auth for AP's.
Mikrotik is a very stable product and has been used to provide wireless to entire cities. A lot of wisp use mikrotik.
Mikrotik has many features and in some ways I prefer over pfSense especially as an AP or WDS/mesh. It can do both gui and command line like cisco which some like as all configuration can be done via ssh.
I went back to pfsense for 2 reasons. 1. Captive portal/radius improved in 2.0
2. I am very familiar with configuring pfsense and mikrotik required too much time for me to learn. Also no paid support for mikrotik though many 3rd party engineers can support for $65/hr.If I were to deploy a very large infrastructure ..ie 25 to 50 AP's or larger I would go with mikrotik… Cost wise it is also less expensive as it is primarily used by WISP's.....
I would definitely recommend buying a level 4 mikrotik router and playing with it. The experience was worth it as I now have a better solution for wireless which feature wise is on par with cisco for the price of a linksys/netgear device from a retail store!
