was just going to check into this again and now I can't replicate it, where it used to happen almost every post.

It seemingly happens to everyone from time to time, we just haven't had time to look into it.

I am an admin on an SMF based forum that has done  the same thing in the past…  In fact Ive seen this on a couple others also...  I don't know what we did to fix it other than possibly a full reboot of the server.    I would suggest you guys upgrade to 2.0.2 when you have some time to do so...  Make sure your present theme will work first.

It's not really a problem, it's just odd.

            For me,
it looks like array/filer/hard drive/just storage timeout (overloaded?) since this is happening when We are going to update database and not always.

Server reboot? It doesn't run on Windows. ;) Actually the server has rebooted since this started happening.

I've ruled out database delays and any possible network issues, something's not right within SMF itself. Apache and PHP in general are fine, a few other sites run in the same jail with no issue. I turned off SMF's reverse DNS lookups as it felt like possibly that kind of delay even though I didn't see PTR lookups being issued, no diff there. I turned on logging of all PHP errors, and it hasn't logged anything relevant.

Definitely want to get upgraded to SMF 2.0.x soon, hopefully that resolves it, and without creating too much chaos in general with the theme and other things.

                Yea I shoulda known better…    ;D

Im watching for it on all the (known to me) forums and version numbers...  See if there's a correlation...  Im curious if its caused by the constant bot hits and possibly related to the "security issues" the newer versions are supposed to fix.

Ive not seen it on our forums lately though...    All on 2.0.2 now.

Shouldn't be any unpatched security issues in SMF 1.x, it's gotten updates as needed and is still supported until the end of this year at least. While we do get nailed with bots and stupid crawlers on occasion that at rare times go to the extent of DoSing the entire site with huge floods of requests, that's rare and it's definitely not related to the post delay.

Well- after noticing that my Java was slightly outdated and updating it I no longer have the issue…    Not so sure that was the fix but for now Ive tested several times and its gone.

Remoted into my desktop at the shop and could not duplicate it there either...

As soon as I can pry my laptop out of my son's hands Ill try it.

It's not specific to any one machine or browser, I use several browsers across several machines with 3 different OSes and they all do it periodically. Judging by the network traffic I've captured on several occasions when it happens, it's definitely not client-related.

I believe it started when we upgraded to 1.1.16 or not long after. We also added an AAAA right around the same time, but that doesn't appear to be related, m0n0wall's forum has had an AAAA for a long time on the same SMF versions with no such issues, and it's the same whether I'm on v4 or v6 and most of the people here are on v4.

Just thinking out load here because I'm not an admin on any forum  ;) but…

It seems to me that the fact there is never a delay when modifying or previewing a post must be a clue. Especially because when modifying a post the browser is redirected back to the post in the thread where as when posting a new post it redirects to the sub-forum index. This behaviour always seemed to be slightly inconvenient to me since I almost always then go back to check my post (and correct the terrible spelling!). Looking at the SMF docs I see there is a variable to control this: redirectexit
I wonder whether this still at the default setting, redirects to the forum index, or is trying to redirect to some thing non-existant?
Either way it would be my preference to redirect to the post.

                            Steve

Edit: No delay on this post.  ::)

And now I see that there is a setting for doing the above in user profile, 'Return to topics after posting by default'.

                              Steve

Edit: And it works like a champ!  :)

Edit2: Doesn't effect the delay though.

This has been bugging me for some time, I made the change to return to topics, and also setup quick reply.  Lets see if that makes any difference?

That was instant - and now this modify went? Fast as hell as well!  Lets see how it goes in other sections.

still see delays now and then, have to check my settings again.  But reporting posts just seems broke!

Those damn gibberish spam posts – try to report one, and just sits there saying connecting.  So not sure its actually reported or not?

So why does it just sit there and saying connecting?  Seems like there is something not quite right with the forum – there can not be that many users when Im on at 1:30am in the morning you would think a post would be pretty much instant ;)

edit:  That one was instant..  Will wait and see what happens with next post that needs to be reported.

there are general locking problems in this version of SMF according to what I've found and heard from others. We'll get this upgraded to SMF 2.0 in the not too distant future which will fix.
