Forward UDP broadcast between two interfaces
-
Hi everyone…
I have pfSense 1.2.3 acting as a routing firewall between 3 VLANs (1, 2 and 3). Since this firewall is running in a production environment, I am waiting for the official 2.0 release to upgrade :). Each VLAN has its own subnet and a different interface in pfSense (LAN, OPT1 and OPT2). More specifically, VLAN 1 (LAN) is for wired computers and VLAN 2 (OPT1) is for wireless computers/mobile devices, etc. Interface OPT1 has no special configuration for Wifi, this is done by our Wifi access points system. This setup is working perfectly.
I need to deploy a voice conferencing application that uses UDP broadcast (255.255.255.255) on a specific port (UDP 5151) on client devices located in VLANs 1 and 2. Currently, all devices on VLAN 1 can communicate with each other, same on VLAN 2. But a device on VLAN 1 cannot establish a conference with a device on VLAN 2 because the broadcast packets are staying in the VLAN from where they were sent. I expected this behavior.
Now, here is my question. Is there a way to configure pfSense to forward those specific broadcast packets (UDP 5151 with destination 255.255.255.255) between VLAN 1 and 2 without changing the current network architecture.
Thanks for your advices.

I think not while using the limited broadcast address. Can your devices be made to use a directed subnet broadcast? The only other option I know of would be to bridge the two LANs. If you're passing broadcasts between them, then you've effectively bridge them anyway.
