Wifi doesn't show up, and I lose the ablitiy to get to the web config
-
So I finally setup a PFsense "box" well it actually an oldish HP 2710p that a laptop/tablet I use the Ethernet as the WAN and I am trying to get the wifi to be the LAN. Before I enable the WiFi, everything runs "normal", I can get to the web config. when I add the wifi interface AND enable the interface go through the settings, click save and apply: A) wifi doesn't show up, B) I can no longer get into the web config. When I actually go to the box I can see that it has added the interface, and "has the IP address assigned". I have tried infrastructure, ad-hoc(not supported apparently), access point…all with no luck....any help would be of great...well help :P
Thanks in advance -
I don't remember the answer to the web access question but I saw it recently. If you are getting to the web interface from the WAN port that gets disabled or blocked when you enable a LAN port. you have to tweak something to keep the WAN access active and accessible. Darned if I can recall what needed tweaked though.

WiFi doesn't show up where? What particular indicator are you looking for?
B) I can no longer get into the web config. When I actually go to the box I can see that it has added the interface, and "has the IP address assigned".
How are you trying to get to the web config? Please be more precise than "can't get into the web config": the browser stalls, the browser reports something (what?)

What is the WiFi link supposed to talk to? It seems you might be expecting it to act as an Access Point in which case you should set its interface mode to Access Point NOT Infrastructure and NOT Ad-hoc.

I have a fluke as I used to be a network admin, if its broadcasting the fluke will pick it up. The objective is to set up a wireless router so infrastructure, since generally that is what is chosen with routers unless you are setting up….thats besides the point. If you think that it needs to be on access point fine, however I was trying diffrent modes mainly for troubleshooting reasons. For the web config the WAN is the only way in, atlest until the wifi starts to work, since its a laptop thats the only option unless i get a pcie ethernet card....

You will need to check that the wireless card is supported by freebsd. The version you are runing shold be listed on the System Information home page in pfsense. for example:
Version 2.0.2-RELEASE (i386)
built on Thu Oct 4 15:24:35 EDT 2012
FreeBSD 8.1-RELEASE-p13The Atheros cards are the most supported. Here is why:

It is supported…so it says...I forgot off the top of my head what it is exactly, but its a broadcom chipset, I know not the best supported in this case, but I am really trying hard to not buy anything...my old router is dying and netgears are junk in my opinion, love cisco but 200 for a decent one is too much for my budget.... so why not create a "super router" thats upgradeable as my life upgrades...
I am running version 2.0.2, sorry for not saying that sooner. -
o i get that for sure. I want to setup wifi on my pfsense machine, but I have no money to do it. So I am using my old access point. When it breaks, then perhaps I will go get an Atheros based card. Friend of mine has one in his pfsense and it works well enough.

At some point I might try with this: http://forum.pfsense.org/index.php/topic,59376.0.html
He seems to be one of the few people who can use N with PFsense, My card is an N card I think but wont let me use it…its not something that I am going to get all worked up about.
I just need it working....it shows up in the device list...but I can't get it to broadcast a signal no matter what...well atlest what I can think of to try. -

If you figure it out please let me know, I am semi new to pfsense, I mean we use it where I work…but they are used for completely different reasons then what I am trying to do with them....thanks in advance

Grandkids have gone so I had time to search and I think this is what you may be looking for:

well, it seems that solved that issue, since the wan port is on a private network, and its test box at the moment, I did the allow all traffic and so forth and so on, and then set the wireless interface as the LAN turned it on…boom still can get in through the WAN sadly though I still have no wifi tho.... =/

Sorry I can't help with the card, I usually just hook a cheap router up on the LAN side and connect to its LAN ports after disabling DHCP. Saves fussing with compatibility and lets me put it where I need the signal too.

I do thank you for the help, and that's a smart idea….that I quickly thought about as a work around....till I realized not possible because I only have one eth NIC then I thought about routing statements....but that idea was tossed when I realized that doesn't help either...since I am trying to remove this $40 dollar netgear that I hate oh so much, being a person who loves Cisco with all his heart can't quite stand to have anything else, unless of course he makes one himself.....sounds weird refereeing to myself in the third person. (sigh) thank you sir for your help.
